The Story of the Dogwood | Easter Sunday

Faith Corner

I have always loved the Dogwood flower. It absolutely amazed me when I heard the story of its significance a few years ago. Today on Easter Sunday I wanted to take time to share the story for others to read incase you didn’t know the beauty that this amazing flower holds.

Because of its role in the crucifixion, it is said that God both cursed and blessed the tree. It was cursed to forever be small, so that it would never grow large enough again for its wood to be used as a cross for a crucifixion. It’s branches would be narrow and crooked–not good for building at all.

At the same time, however, the tree was blessed so that it would produce beautiful flowers each spring, just in time for Easter. To remember God’s promise to the tree it is said he gave it a few traits so that whoever looks upon it will never forget.

The 4 points of the flower

  1. The Dogwood flower has 4 petals, shaped like a cross.

  2. The middle of the Dogwood flower, a crown of thorns.

  3. At the edge of each petals, a nail dent.

  4. The nail dents are stained with the color of Jesus’ blood.

This picture I took this week of a Dogwood flower. How amazing the shape of the petals are that it is in the shape of the cross.
